Reaction to Office Ergonomics Training: Conventional Wisdom vs. Current Ergonomics

I have chosen the topic about conventional wisdom versus current ergonomics. This is one issue that people, who are working at an office and even a plain student in school, should be aware of. They work most of the time in a steady position and usually in front of the computer doing work like simple encoding and research paper writing, so to speak. I became shocked when I was reading the whole article for some of the things mentioned reflected the erroneous ergonomics I have been doing and following a long time ago. At least now, I am duly aware of the proper ergonomics to be followed to avoid some repetitive stress injuries. As what the article had implied, slight movement rather than to stay in a freezing posture is required of modern ergonomics (http://office-ergo.com/conventi.htm, 2005).

According to the article, the monitor distance should be the farthest distance away from the eyes providing that the text can be clearly seen though the conventional way suggested that it should be 18-24 inches away (http://office-ergo.com/conventi.htm, 2005). Well, with this matter, I’ll try to sit farthest from the monitor as much as possible. With regards to the mouse that I tend to push away from me, I’ll try to use it as closer as I can. When I sit in front of the computer, I always try to maintain a 90 degree hip posture or an upright posture. Oh well, the article said it’s wrong! A 130 degree hip posture would make things right. I can’t promise I can do that. It was also suggested that the eye height must be highest a monitor should be. I do the other way around. My monitor is exactly the same level with that of my eyes. Oh well, enough of the improper ergonomics I follow. Now, I found some correct ergonomics that I do. Proper ergonomics about keyboard height, keyboard angle and wrist rests are some of those things. To wrap things up, the article taught me simple yet very important things about proper ergonomics. All must benefit from this because if we just work and work without knowing the hazards that work may give us, our health might suffer which is our only sword in the workplace battlefield. If ever researches and studies prove someday that some ergonomics commonly observed in the workplace are wrong, I hope that the right information dissemination will be done.
